Throne of Darkness is a hidden gem for anyone who loves old-school isometric action games. Set in Feudal Japan, the atmosphere is incredibly distinct, and the ability to control a party of seven unique samurai adds a layer of depth that you don’t see in many other titles. While the visuals show their age, the core gameplay loop remains satisfying and quite challenging. It really shines on a PC setup where you can appreciate the unique character skill trees and tactical combat.
I recently picked this up again for the nostalgia, and it still holds up surprisingly well. Managing your team’s gear and switching between them during intense mob encounters feels rewarding. It is not as polished as modern AAA releases, but the story and the dark, supernatural Eastern setting keep you engaged until the very end. The inventory management can be a bit clunky at times, but if you enjoy deep RPG systems and a moody soundtrack, it is definitely worth your time.
