Risen: A Masterclass in Old-School Open World RPGs

Risen is a total blast from the past that manages to hold its own even by today’s standards. The world-building is top-notch, and the struggle to survive on Faranga feels genuinely rewarding as you grow from a nobody into a powerful warrior or mage. I recently replayed it on my PC, and the sense of discovery really holds up. While the combat animations feel a bit stiff compared to modern titles, the environmental storytelling and freedom are unmatched.

I love how the game doesn’t hold your hand at all. You really have to learn the systems, manage your resources, and pay attention to NPC clues to progress through the story. The atmosphere is gritty, the quests feel meaningful, and the faction choices genuinely impact how you play the game. If you missed out on this classic RPG gem, you are missing out on one of the most immersive experiences in the action-RPG genre. It is definitely worth a playthrough!
