LISA: The Painful is easily one of the most emotionally devastating RPGs I have ever played. The dark humor combined with the constant feeling of dread makes it a truly unique experience that sticks with you long after the credits roll. While the pixelated art style might look simple at first glance, the world-building is incredibly deep and disturbing. Playing this on my PC really highlighted how well the turn-based combat holds up, even when the choices you make feel morally gut-wrenching.
The difficulty is definitely not for everyone, as the game forces you to make permanent sacrifices that affect your party members and the narrative. I love how the music perfectly captures the hopeless vibe of Olathe, making every encounter feel significant. If you enjoy games that challenge your ethics while providing a solid, tactical gameplay loop, this is a must-play. It is a harsh, weird, and unforgettable journey that rewards players who aren’t afraid of a little suffering in their storytelling.
