Darkest of Days is definitely one of those cult classics that had a really ambitious concept. I loved the idea of jumping between major historical events like the Civil War and World War I to fix the timeline. While the graphics certainly show their age today, the sheer scale of the battles is still pretty impressive. The mechanics feel a bit clunky compared to modern shooters, but if you enjoy a solid historical premise, it’s worth a look on your PC.
The combat feels chaotic and fun, especially when you start using futuristic weapons against soldiers armed with muskets. It’s a strange mix, but it somehow works for a casual afternoon of gaming. I didn’t find the AI to be particularly smart, but the replay value comes from the variety of time periods you get to visit. If you can look past some dated performance issues and buggy hitboxes, you’ll find a genuinely interesting experimental shooter that is worth experiencing at least once.
