Returning to the world of Aya Brea after all these years was a nostalgic trip. The 3rd Birthday pushes the PSP hardware to its absolute limit, featuring some of the most impressive cutscenes of that console generation. While the Overdrive mechanic adds a unique tactical layer to the combat, the story can get a bit convoluted if you aren’t paying close attention to the lore. Still, the fast-paced action and the gritty, atmospheric enemy designs kept me hooked until the final boss fight.
It is a shame we never received a proper port to a modern PC platform, as the controls would feel so much better with dual analog sticks. Despite the camera occasionally being a headache in tight corners, the sheer style and polish of this title make it a standout in the series. If you enjoy challenging encounters and deep customization systems, it’s definitely worth digging out your old handheld to experience this cult classic experience again.
